The Republicans announced their belief that each state could decide whether they wanted slavery or not. 6. Explain the significance of the event - especially as it relates to worsening relationship between the North and South.
Lincoln won most of the free states. Doulgas won most of the border states. Breckinridge won all of the south. This shows the division of the groups of people Lincoln was in favor of anti-slavery, Breckinridge was strong in opnion with the south and Douglas didn't really have a position. The election of Lincoln became the final signal to the southerners that their position in the union was hopeless.
